A slow laptop doesn’t always mean you need a new one. Before you spend money on a replacement, try these simple steps that fix the most common causes of sluggish performance.
1. Restart it properly
Many people put their laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down. Over time, background processes pile up and eat your memory. A full restart clears them out and often makes an immediate difference.
2. Close tabs and startup programs
Every open browser tab uses memory. If you regularly have 15 or more tabs open, that alone can slow things down. Also check which programs launch automatically when your computer starts — disable anything you don’t need right away.
3. Free up storage space
When your hard drive or SSD is nearly full, the system struggles to manage files. Delete old downloads, clear your recycle bin, and move large files like videos to an external drive or cloud storage.
4. Run a malware scan
Malware running in the background can silently consume your computer’s resources. Use Windows Defender or another trusted antivirus tool to run a full scan.
5. Consider a hardware upgrade
If your laptop still feels slow after these steps, the hardware may be the bottleneck. Adding more RAM or swapping a traditional hard drive for an SSD are the two upgrades that make the biggest difference, and they’re usually much cheaper than buying a new machine.
